AI-driven deepfake CEO fraud has become, really fast, one of the most sophisticated and terrorizing menaces of today’s cybersecurity landscape. Cybercriminals use state-of-the-art advanced deep learning algorithms to design and develop hyper-realistic video and audio impersonations of top executives of firms—think CEOs/CFOs. Through deepfakes, copying voice, speech patterns, facial gestures, and body language becomes just perfect to impersonate a character to a tee, and all that is literally impossible because it is artificial intelligence-generated.

In one recent, high-profile attack, bad actors used a deepfake of a CEO to instruct a company’s financial team to urgently approve a multi-million-dollar transaction for a “time-sensitive business deal.” Believing the request was legitimate, the staff executed the transfer, only to discover too late that the video was a sophisticated scam.

What makes this attack so dangerous is the combination of state-of-the-art AI technology and traditional social engineering. Traditional security protocols, like multi-factor authentication and internal verification processes, were easily bypassed since the deepfake was that convincing. As AI continues to develop further, these attacks will just keep getting more and more sophisticated, allowing criminals to manipulate trust, authority, and decision-making within organizations.
